Agriculture Is Important Because...

Stephanie won second place for her efforts in the contest and received a gift certificate from Subway.  Great job Stephanie! 

All the fourth graders entered the Wood County Farm Bureau essay contest in January. This contest was open to all fourth and fifth graders countywide.  The students submitted essays written on the topic of “Wisconsin Agriculture is Important because”.  A fifth grader in Wisconsin Rapids wrote the winning essay.  The committee reported that they had a very difficult time picking out the winning essay as each child had put forth a lot of effort. 

We are proud of Stephanie and of all the students for working hard on these essays.  They are all winners!

Agriculture isn't about just cows and corn, but so many other things that we really depend on in our lives. Farmers work hard to produce our food. Every time we eat we should appreciate the farmers that have worked hard to make it possible for us to eat good and healthy food. This is the number one reason why agriculture is important to me. Especially like ice cream, fruits, and vegetables. Just think without agriculture we wouldn't live because we have to eat. Agriculture is also important because different kinds of farmers provide different products we need and want.

Christmas tree farmers raise our Christmas trees for us to have for the holidays. People who raise plants in nurseries make it possible for us to have pretty flowers. Even our clothes are products of agriculture because animals like sheep give us their wool to make some clothes. These sheep had to be raised by farmers in agriculture.

Another reason I think agriculture is important is because it creates jobs as vets, cattle haulers, milk truck drivers, machinery salesmen, and grocery store owners. They wouldn't have jobs if it wasn't for agriculture. These are just a few of the jobs associated with agriculture. There are many more. These people then spend their money to buy things. My mom says that this is how agriculture helps grow our economy.

One more way that agriculture is important to us is it can heat our homes, and run our cars. Using ethanol, corn is used to make our environment cleaner than regular gas.

As you can see, agriculture is important to all of us in many ways. I live on a farm so I know how hard farmers work to provide things. Everyone should be thankful for agriculture.
